Git and HG Working Together

So I have taken a new job and the one thing that concerned me was the fact that they use mercurial as their version control system. I am a long time svn user but recently, about 8 months ago, switched to git partly because my work was switching to git. I was in charge of converting the main project I worked on from svn to git and that process was pretty simple (considering that converting history was not a top concern). Ever since then I have been one of two go to people at my current employment for git questions. I have completely embraced the git way and the system is pretty simple but still very powerful. The best thing I like about it is that it really allows the user to define the workflow instead of forcing a particular workflow on you like other version control systems do. The only downside to git is that to extend functionality, you need to write bash scripts (though through the process, I have become better at it).

jQuery Conference
Dec. 4th, 2010 at 05:31pm

I was able to attend the jQuery Boston 2010 conference a while back thanks to my employer and it was a pretty good experience. Conferences are pretty good events to go to for socializing/networking with like minded people and to learn some new tips and tricks. Since I am not the most sociable person in the world, it was lucky that I did indeed learn some new things about jQuery and JavaScript in general.

New Job, Kinda
Dec. 3rd, 2010 at 06:27am

I wanted to regularly post on my blog but it has been a while since my last post. Since my last post, I got a new job (kinda, been over 4 months now) that has turned so far to be a pretty good upgrade in my career as a web developer. The job is located in boston which is the last place I though I would ever take a job because of what I though the commute would be but in reality, the commute is not all the bad (considering I drive to the subway and not directly into boston).

Moving Domains and Eventually Servers
Dec. 3rd, 2010 at 06:13am

In about five days all my domains, including this one, are going to be transfered to godaddy. I don't except any type of outages when moving the domains but the move of my domains is in preparation for me possibly moving servers before the end of the year. If I do end up moving to a new server, I may have some outages (hope to keep them to a minimum). Whether or not I move to a new server is going to depend on how well the next few weeks of testing ASP.NET MVC 3 goes. If I decide that I really want to get into it in-depth, then I will need to move to a server that has windows on it as I am not even going to try to deal with running ASP.NET through MONO on a linux server.

I just wanted to make sure I don't freak out the 10's of users I get per month if my website does not load for a brief period of time.

WWDC - iPhone 4
Jun. 8th, 2010 at 11:35pm

Well yesterday, as everyone excepted, Steve Jobs announced and demoed the new iPhone and what is now called iOS 4 in the Keynote (among other things like stats on the iPad and talking about some apps too). Now I still have an iPhone 3G, although I do own an iPad but I will write about my experiences on that in another post, and about 8 months left in my contract with AT&T so lets take a look at the new features to see if it is worth the upgrade.

Welcome to My Website
Jun. 4th, 2010 at 07:44pm

My name is Ryan Zec and I am a professional web developer located north of Boston MA. If you would like to find out more about me, please vist my about page.

This is my new website. I will be writing about a large number of topics ranging from rants to gaming but mostly dealing with programming as that is what I spend a lot of my time doing.

I have been working on this website for a bit and figure that it is about time to release it to the public. I would be interested to hear what you guys think about the design. Designing is not one of my strong skills and while I don't think the design I have it great, I think I might be overly critical of myself when it comes to design work. I am going for something simple, clean, and easy to navigate. Any suggestions are welcomed.

If you have any comments or questions about anything that you would like to ask me, please feel free to contact me and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
